Many of you may already know this but I am at a new weight class 66 kg. I have not yet established myself in this new weight class. So this tournament was very important from my perspective. I received the draw I was hoping for, in getting all current ranked guys.
My first match was against Matt Holt who is currently ranked 6th in the country. I came out sluggish in this match and my head was a bit out of it. Non the less I was able to pull out a win in three periods. My next match was against the current 7th ranked man in the country, Teyon Ware. I was fortunate enough to have things go my way and I won the match in two straight periods. In the semi-finals I faced the 2004 Olympian and number two ranked guy Oscar Wood. It was a hard fought battle and I came up on top after three periods. This put me into the finals against close friend and roommate Jake Curby. Curby was able to take the Championship in two periods.
My goal coming into this tournament was to bring home a medal, which I did. I also did what I wanted in establishing myself at 66 kg. However, it is still very much an uphill battle with finishing as the runner-up. Also knowing that my opponents probably want some type of revenge. There is no time for rest at this time of the year. I will return back to Marquette and continue my normal training.
Our team dominated the competition as well. We brought home the championship in three of the seven weights along with four seconds and many other placed. That’s all for now, I’ll keep you posted and keep praying for my success.
